INTIMATE OBSESSION

initialized by Mandy Meissner

STARTING POINT

The investigation of intimacy among people without them wanting to be intimate with each other.
Thinking of places like public transportation or elevators. INTIMATE OBSESSION uses clothing as
medium to make the invisible borderline between close and too close visible.

FIRST EXPERIMENT

Color as indicator is used to explore, how intimate situations
can provoce marks on the garment. The people in this
experiment are touching each other, with prompt reaction,
the mutation of the garment is offensiv.

BEING MORE SUBTLE

While traditional techniques such as kniting or pleating already
offend a varity of possibilities to change the garment, color spots
are a very offend method. Further experiments focus on more
subtle ways to express changes and mutations.

THE PROTOTYPES

I have choosen 3 concepts to create for intimate obsessed people. They work with different intensities
of mutation and reaction, beginning with smart pleats that are readable over a longer period, to clothes
that are spontanous loosing functionality.

THE FALLING SLEEVE

The dress looses one sleeve while shoulder or back are points of contact to initiate the reaction.

THE GROWING WHOLE

While the garment is loosing single ladders, wholes are spread out all over the dress.
The size of the wholes is corresponding to the level of touch intensity.

THE PLEAT

This dress reacts on a soft touch while the garment is mutating with several pleats.
Thinking of a period of about a day, the garment is littered with pleats in order to show people`s wounds.

THE TECHNIQUE

The color experiment is based on a plastic sleeve underneath the shirt. Little pockets with tiny holes are filled with ink. Pressing the plastic, the ink is leaking. The pleat prototype is working with servos underneath the clothing. Strings, dragged by the servos are creating the pleats.
