lightfinder I

by Christian Meinke

The analyses of Braitenberg and Walter in behavior of cybernetic Creatures and "imitations of life" are starting point for the project.
(Valentin Braitenberg "Vehicles. Experiments in Synthetic Psychology" MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass. 1984)

This cybernetic creatures consisting out of a variety of sensors and engines showed emotion similar behaviors, that reached from cowardice (avoiding of objects) to love (coming closer to objects). Braitenberg and Walter supported the point of view, that some of their creatures showed a liberal will.
Lightfinder tries to take up and continue these considerations. With technically simplest materials an object should arise, that reacts to attractions of his environment as self-sufficiently as possible.

Besides different sequences of movement the lightfinder should be able to react to his environment also acoustically. After first tests with light dependent resistances, the creature was provided with a simple oscillator, wich is triggered by a solar cell. This already produced a various spectrum of frequency modulations at artificial light. A direct solar radiation, however, put the Lightfinder into almost ecstatic conditions, and additionally breathed life into the lifeless construction of wires, synthetic material and electronic constituents.
