Description

A medial installation, in which four live-webcam-streams are projected on 3D-models of the particular places.

Why are there so many webcams on the net, when most of them lack any serious function such as security or traffic monitoring?
In fact webcams just show the real life, which is not very exiting most of the time. But as we all know this, those streamed pictures are more drawn from life to us, than any event on which e.g. a broadcast is focussed. Webcams open the most direct tunnel to a foreign reality.

„Roermond-Ecke-Schönhauser“ completes this idea by transforming this distant reality from virtuality to something real, touchable. Therefore four elected webcam-streams (Denmark, crossing | Amsterdam, laundromat | Berlin, courtyard | Holland, marketplace) are projected with the help of a mirror construction on four models of the particular places. To make the projection fit on the models, the architecture of the webcam-places was rebuild in a 3D-application and printed on a 3D-plotter, matching for the optics of the projector, which are different from those of the webcams. That way, the picture information is displayed on distorted geometrical shapes, similar to which it is filmed from. The result are four „live-models“ of a distant space, which can be regarded three-dimensional and are touchable. With this material manifestation, the transmission, in contrast to the usual webcam, where it remains virtual, is completed. The viewer adepts the webcam-stream as „real“.

Setup

A video projector enligthens four acrylic models, which are positioned around
the beamer in a semicircle. To divide the light, four small mirrors on a special
construction in front of the projector are used.

Installation

The video projector creates from each blank model a live-webcam-miniature of the distant place, the cam filmes. It projects the webcam picture information on the exact adapted geometrics of the models.

Technology description

The video-projector is standing in the middle of the installation and projects towards the viewer on a mirror-construction consisting of four mirrors. These mirrors split the picture and send the four webcam-pictures to redirected fitting models, which are positioned around the mirror-construction in a semi circle. The models itself (each about 20 x 20 x 10 cm of size) are rebuild as architectural miniatures of the corresponding places. They were created in a 3D-application. But the color information was removed. Afterwards they were printed on a 3D-plotter (rapid prototyping). The missing color information is now, live streamed from the origin place, projected on the miniatures. That way, that the picture information is displayed on exactly the same shapes, from which it was filmed. Four live models of the distant places are created.

Realisation

The architecture, seen on the webcam pictures, had been rebuild in a 3D-application. The created models were printed on a 3D-plotter, harded, grounded and varnished.
