hamstArena

loopArena without technology
by Jens Wunderling

The Intermediate Diploma Project loopArena is a music interface with generative Elements. The most important fact is that every element is a software-agent with a programmed behaviour, which enables the agent to alter a melody created by the user on its own.

The main aspect is to interact with autonomous Creatures and to create music at the same time. Because it is impossible to create musical creatures without the use of software, existing creatures and their natural behaviours must be utilized. Perfect for that task are hamsters, because it is not exceptional playing with them.
Hamsters are no musical creatures, so the main aspects of their behaviour must be tranlated into musical information by the means of mechanics. Especially suitable are their will to run and their need for food and company.

In a cage with two separate Areas, two hamsters are ...well, hamsters. One has access to a jogging wheel which repeatedly hits a metal plate which then produces a sound.
The other Hamster is roaming his half of the cage and influences the sound over a leash which is attached to a kind of damping-mechanism, like the pedal on a piano.

The control possibilites are: feeding, attracting, and putting in the jogwheel.
Each cage plays one note, for a whole scale, eight cages and sixteen hamsters are needed.
