City of Tears
A media art project by David Loehr ( www.scienceunderfire.com )
The artistic attempt was to give the cityscape a possibility to express itself. I also wanted to reduce the use of electronics and techonology to a minimum. there is no electronic controlling device or whatsoever being found in the construction. it is pure analogue media art, using paint as an expressive media.

research
berlin's cityscape is dotted by run-down buildings that are in a state most of them – especially the old building fabric – does not deserve. it is a result of berlins ongoing rebuilding, restructuring and the lack of budget. it also represents berlins provisorial state, which is so characteristic. this situation serves as a foundation for my intentions.

metaphor
looking at the empty windows of those ruins leads to a simple, yet strong approch. the openings of a building could be seen as significant parts of a human body. the windows represent the faces, splintered facades could be wounds in the skin and broken pillars could be seen as broken bones. the paint i planned to use as the media represents bodily fluids. so the windows start to cry, the walls start to bleed...

design
for the time being a full realisation of the project seemed not suitable. so i constructed an prototype that is fully functional, but only works with canvas, since the colours i used are airbrush-colours. i put the array of the nozzles and the tank inside an empty flowerbox to create an mobile object that can be placed subtlely upon an windowshelf to let the colour be dripping!
